What Problems Do You Solve? Why Every Marketer Should Know the Answer
If I asked you, “What problems do you solve?” — could you confidently and clearly answer?
For many marketing professionals, this question can stop them in their tracks. But the truth is, being able to articulate the value you bring — in the form of problems you solve — is one of the most powerful ways to stand out in an interview, on your CV, or even in a leadership meeting.
Why This Question Matters
When hiring managers or recruiters ask this, they’re not just being philosophical — they’re looking for clarity, confidence, and self-awareness. They want to know why you’re worth hiring.
Being able to answer this question succinctly helps position you as a strategic problem-solver, not just a doer. It shows that you understand your impact and can link your work directly to business outcomes — something every great marketer should be able to do.
A Great Example in Action
Recently, I met a CMO who was exploring their next opportunity. Within 60 seconds, they outlined three problems they consistently solve — clearly, confidently, and with purpose.
Here’s what they said:
1️⃣
“I’m brought in to inject a better team culture. I take broken teams and make them better.”
→ They don’t just lead people; they transform teams.
2️⃣
“I lead complex digital transformations, simplifying the process throughout, turning complex jargon into actionable, clear common goals.”
→ They make digital transformation accessible and achievable.
3️⃣
“I lead rebrands at a global and local scale. Safeguarding the brand, ensuring it speaks to the customer, taking the product into a new dimension.”
→ They protect and elevate brand integrity while connecting it to real customer needs.
That’s impact. That’s confidence. And that’s clarity.
How to Craft Your Own
If you’ve got an interview this week — or even if you’re just planning your next career move — take a few minutes to practise this exercise:
- Write down three problems you’re known for solving.
- Say them out loud — they should roll off the tongue with confidence.
- Make them specific, outcome-focused, and memorable.
The goal isn’t to brag — it’s to own your story and communicate your value clearly.
