So You’ve Been Made Redundant as a Marketer — What Now?

November 18, 2025

A Supportive Guide to Finding Your Next Chapter...

Redundancy is one of those moments that can shake even the most seasoned marketer. One minute you’re planning next quarter’s campaigns… the next, you’re staring at an unexpected email, trying to make sense of what just changed.

And if this news lands right before Christmas? That hits differently. The festive season brings enough pressure on its own — the last thing anyone needs is navigating a job search on top of it.

If you’ve recently found yourself between roles, I want you to know this: you’re not alone. I’ve spoken to quite a few marketers in the same position lately, and the emotions are the same across the board — shock, frustration, uncertainty, and that “what now?” feeling.

This blog is here to help you slow down, regroup, and create a clear, grounded plan for your next move.

1️⃣ First things first: take a breath

Redundancy can feel like a whirlwind, and your first instinct might be to open SEEK, fire up LinkedIn and start applying for anything that vaguely resembles your job title.

Please don’t. Give yourself permission to pause. You’re not “falling behind”. You’re not “wasting time”. You’re processing a big shift, and that matters.

This little reset can be the difference between reacting… and making intentional decisions about your career.

2️⃣ Reconnect, reflect, and rebuild your confidence

Marketing is a people-centric industry, and now is the perfect moment to lean into your network.

  • Reach out to former colleagues for a coffee.
  • Send a quick hello to mentors or leaders you’ve worked with.
  • Connect with a recruiter you trust (hi 👋).

Use these conversations as low-pressure touchpoints — not to ask for a job, but to remind yourself of your strengths, your impact, and the kind of environment where you do your best work.

Then take the time to reflect:

  • What type of role actually energises you?
  • Do you want agency or client-side?
  • Hybrid, remote, or office-first?
  • Leadership or specialist path?
  • What are your non-negotiables in culture?

Redundancy can be a forced pause… but it’s also a rare chance to reset your trajectory.

3️⃣ Update your story — yes, your LinkedIn matters more than ever

This is the moment to polish your professional narrative.

  • Refresh your LinkedIn headline to clearly communicate who you are and what you bring.
  • Add recent achievements and impact (numbers where you can).
  • Tighten your summary so it reads like a strong intro — not a shopping list.
  • Make sure your values, goals, and strengths are clear.

And then, practice saying your story out loud.
Your narrative should feel natural, confident, and memorable.

It’s the thing that helps you stand out — not just your CV.

4️⃣ Stay visible, even if you’re not ready to apply

You don’t have to make big, bold posts. Visibility can look like:

  • Commenting thoughtfully on industry trends
  • Sharing an article that resonated
  • Posting a short insight from your last role
  • Engaging with brands or leaders you admire

This keeps you connected to the marketing world — and on the radar of people who might approach you with an opportunity.

One personal rule I always give candidates:
👉
Spend no more than two hours a day on LinkedIn or SEEK.

They’re great platforms, but when you’re between roles they can quickly become an unhelpful rabbit hole. Protect your energy.

5️⃣ Most importantly — don’t lose heart

Hiring naturally slows a little this time of year, but trust me: January is shaping up to be busy. Many teams hold off recruitment until budgets reset, meaning a wave of roles hit the market early in the new year.

Your next chapter is coming. This moment isn’t a full stop — it’s a comma.

If you need support, you don’t have to navigate this alone

Whether you're feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, my inbox is open. Sometimes you just need a sounding board, a fresh perspective, or someone to help you map out your next steps.

Redundancy is tough — but it doesn’t define you.

Your skills are still valuable.
Your experience still matters.
And the right role is out there waiting for you.

Here’s to clarity, confidence, and the new opportunities ahead.

At New Chapter Talent , we get to connect with some of the most inspiring marketing leaders across Australia and New Zealand — and a common theme keeps emerging: the quiet power of the generalist marketer . It came up again at our recent New Chapter: CMO Collective Club lunch , where several CMOs shared their love for the book Range by David Epstein. In a world that often celebrates specialisation — the data gurus, the brand purists, the performance pros — these marketers reminded us why having range is something to be proud of. The power of the generalist marketer Generalist marketers are the ultimate connectors. They see the big picture — not just the campaign, but the entire ecosystem. They bridge brand and performance, data and creativity, strategy and execution. In today’s fast-paced marketing landscape, where roles and technologies evolve constantly, that adaptability is gold. The ability to zoom out and see how it all fits together is what makes generalists invaluable to teams and organisations alike. Here’s what makes generalist marketers truly shine: They see across the entire customer journey, from awareness to retention. They bring context, connecting insights from different disciplines. They lead cross-functional teams with empathy and perspective. They can pivot quickly when business priorities or market conditions change. Why generalists thrive in modern marketing In Range, David Epstein explores how generalists often outperform specialists in complex, unpredictable environments — precisely the kind of environment marketers operate in today. Epstein’s research spans fields from sport to science to business, showing that early specialisation isn’t always the key to success. Instead, those who explore widely, draw from diverse experiences, and learn to connect ideas across disciplines are often the ones who thrive when faced with change. It’s a book that challenges the “10,000-hour rule” popularised by Malcolm Gladwell , arguing instead that breadth of experience leads to better problem-solving and innovation. For marketers navigating evolving technologies, shifting customer behaviour, and constant transformation, that insight couldn’t be more relevant. The future belongs to the adaptable The future of marketing leadership isn’t just about expertise in one domain. It’s about connection, adaptability, and curiosity . It’s about understanding how everything from brand storytelling to customer data, AI, and CX fits together to drive growth. So here’s to the curious, the adaptable, the connector-marketers who zoom out and dive in — the ones shaping what modern marketing leadership really looks like. And if you haven’t read it yet, grab a copy of Range by David Epstein . It’s a brilliant reminder that being a generalist isn’t a weakness — it’s a superpower .
