How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in an Interview

April 7, 2025

(And how to answer without waffling!)

It's the opening line to many interviews, and yet it has the power to trip up even the most prepared candidate:

"So... tell me about yourself?"

At first glance, it seems simple. But the open-ended nature of the question can leave you second-guessing. What do they actually want to know? How much is too much? What if you waffle on and lose their attention?

Why Do Interviewers Ask This Question?

This isn't a trick question—it’s an opportunity! Hiring managers use this to assess three key things:

  • How well you communicate: Can you be concise and articulate?
  • Your relevance: Do you highlight experience that aligns with the role?
  • Your personality: Do you bring a touch of authenticity and warmth?

In fact, a study by CareerBuilder found that 49% of hiring managers know within the first five minutes of an interview whether a candidate is a good fit. That means your opening response is crucial!

The Formula for a Strong Answer

A great response should be structured, engaging, and to the point. Here’s a winning formula:

1. Start with your professional background

A short, snappy summary of your experience and expertise.

💡 "I’ve spent the past 20 years specialising in marketing recruitment. My passion is helping businesses build high-performing marketing teams and guiding professionals in shaping fulfilling careers. I founded New Chapter Talent to bring a fresh, insight-driven approach to hiring."

2. Highlight a unique or relevant achievement

This could be a career milestone, a passion project, or something that sets you apart.

💡 "Beyond recruitment, I’m also the host of The CMO Chapters Podcast, where I interview top marketing leaders to share behind-the-scenes career advice and industry trends."

3. Add a sprinkle of personality

A little personal touch makes you more memorable and relatable.

💡 "On a personal note, when I'm not recruiting, I love staying fit and reading a good book. Two things you might not know about me? I used to have a pet donkey called Muffin, and as a child, I lived in Saudi Arabia."

Why This Works

  • It’s structured – No waffling, just key points that flow well.
  • It’s engaging – You’re giving the interviewer insight into both your professional and personal side.
  • It’s memorable – Fun facts make you stand out!

Pro Tip: Flip the Conversation

Want to create an instant connection with your interviewer? End your response by turning the tables:

👉 "What are two things I wouldn’t know about you?"

It’s a great way to break the ice and start a real conversation!

Next time you hear, "So… tell me about yourself?" take a deep breath and own the moment. Keep it structured, make it engaging, and most importantly—be yourself!

What’s one fun fact about you that would surprise people?
