Kicking Off the Week Like a Pro: How to Combat Imposter Syndrome and Boost Your Confidence

September 22, 2024

Let’s face it. We've all had that Monday morning feeling — you know, the one where you stare at your to-do list (or lack thereof) and think, “Where on earth do I start?” The self-doubt creeps in, and suddenly, the week ahead feels like an uphill battle. Sound familiar?

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been there. As a recruiter, Mondays sometimes hit hard. Will my client like my shortlist? Will I find the perfect candidates for that hard-to-fill role? What if my latest podcast episode doesn’t land well with listeners?

Cue all the question marks! 🤔

And when those question marks start multiplying, something else shows up, too — good old Imposter Syndrome. That nagging inner voice that makes you question your abilities and accomplishments despite evidence to the contrary. I like to call my imposter syndrome Debbie, as in Debbie Downer, because, well, she's a total downer.

But, I’ve learned how to put Debbie in her place. It’s all about finding balance, perspective, and a bit of self-kindness. Here are my go-to strategies for kicking Debbie out the door and owning my week:

1. Set Bite-Sized Goals

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are your career wins. Trying to tackle everything at once is overwhelming, so break things down into smaller, manageable goals. Whether it’s a simple task like sending a follow-up email or creating a shortlist of candidates, small wins can add up to big progress. And hey, crossing things off a list feels great, doesn’t it?

2. Get Fresh Air and Move Around

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, sometimes the best thing you can do is step away. A quick walk outside, a little fresh air, or even a stretch break can work wonders for clearing your mind and boosting your creativity. Fun fact: studies show that regular movement can reduce anxiety and improve cognitive function — perfect for those moments when you need a mental reboot!

3. Celebrate Your Wins

It’s easy to focus on what’s not going right, but reflecting on your successes (even the small ones!) helps you stay grounded. Did you make progress on a project? Did a client give you positive feedback? Take a moment to acknowledge those wins. They matter, and they help reinforce that you’re on the right track.

4. Tell Debbie to Take a Hike

Sometimes, all it takes is recognising that imposter syndrome is just a voice in your head — and that voice doesn’t control you. For me, giving that voice a name (hi, Debbie!) helps take away its power. When Debbie pops up with her doom-and-gloom thoughts, I can simply tell her to buzz off and refocus on what’s actually important. It’s amazing how much lighter you can feel when you realise those negative thoughts aren’t the truth.

Understanding Imposter Syndrome

By the way, if you’ve ever felt like a fraud or thought, “I don’t belong here,” you’re not alone. Research shows that nearly 70% of people experience imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. Even high achievers like Michelle Obama and Tom Hanks have openly talked about their struggles with it. So, if Debbie shows up in your life, just know that she’s a common visitor for many — and that you’ve got the tools to handle her.

This Week is Yours for the Taking!

Whatever this week has in store, I’m rooting for you. Whether you’re kicking off new projects, wrapping up old ones, or somewhere in between, I hope your week is full of learnings, positive outcomes, and, most importantly, fun! And don’t forget — you’ve got this.

Imposter syndrome? More like Imposter gone. Have a productive week ahead, and remember to enjoy the ride!

The job market can be a rollercoaster—especially in marketing, where roles are shifting, budgets tightening, and the competition for good opportunities is fierce. At New Chapter Talent, we’ve been speaking with many marketers who are navigating job loss, career transitions, and financial strain all at once. And while most friends, family and colleagues mean well, some common comments—though well-intentioned—can actually miss the mark. If someone you know is between jobs in marketing, here’s what not to say—and what to say instead. 1. ❌ “Still no bites?” OR “Any more irons in the fire?” They’re already feeling the pressure, trust us. These kinds of questions, though casual, can unintentionally highlight the uncertainty they're facing. ✅ Try this instead: “Anything exciting in the works? Let me know if I can help.” 2. ❌ “At least you’ve got time to reset!” Sure, burnout is real. But when you’re out of work (and possibly watching your savings dwindle), this doesn’t feel like a ‘reset’. It feels stressful and unsettling. ✅ Try this instead: “How are you going? Job hunting can be exhausting. Here if you need a chat.” 3. ❌ “Have you thought about going freelance?” Freelancing works for some, but it’s not a universal solution—and not everyone wants to be self-employed or has the financial buffer to do so. ✅ Try this instead: “Are you leaning towards in-house, agency, or something else? Keen to hear what you’re looking for.” 4. ❌ “It’s all about who you know.” While there’s truth to the power of networking, this phrase can feel defeating to someone who’s already reaching out and coming up short. ✅ Try this instead: “Who would you love to connect with right now? Happy to make intros if I can.” 5. ❌ “Everything happens for a reason.” This one can sting, especially when rent or mortgage payments are looming and self-doubt is creeping in. ✅ Try this instead: “I feel your pain, and I’m sorry you’re in it. You’re bloody good at what you do, and something great will land.” Support Matters—Now More Than Ever If you're currently in a stable marketing role, this is your moment to show up for others. Share leads. Offer introductions. Back your peers. And sometimes, the best support is just listening without trying to fix. Marketing job seekers don’t need toxic positivity—they need empathy, encouragement, and real opportunities. Let’s be better allies for each other.
