9 things you should be doing while you're unemployed

August 22, 2024

Are you a marketer or CMO currently unemployed and feeling like you’re stuck in the never-ending black hole of job searching on SEEK and LinkedIn? If the sight of those CV tunnels is making you want to scream into the void, then these tips might just be the career life raft you need.

Tip One: Be a Company Stalker (In the Best Possible Way)

First things first, decide where you want to work. Start by identifying the companies and industries that set your heart racing. Whether it’s the creative chaos of an ad agency or the cutting-edge innovation of a tech startup, make a list and start following them on LinkedIn. Become their biggest (and most professional) fan—engage with their posts, understand their culture, and show them that you’re more than just another resume in their inbox.

Tip Two: Build Your Dream Network, One Connection at a Time

Networking can feel like dating sometimes—awkward, slightly terrifying, but ultimately worth it. Challenge yourself to connect with at least five new relevant LinkedIn connections each week. Think hiring managers, HR professionals, talent scouts, and even those colleagues from past gigs who you’re not already connected with. Who knows? One of these connections might just be the key to your next big opportunity.

Tip Three: Time to Be Bold—Amplify Your Personal Brand

Let’s be real—not everyone is comfortable putting themselves out there on LinkedIn. But now is not the time to be a wallflower. Start amplifying your personal brand by sharing authentic, engaging content that showcases your expertise and personality. Remember, the job market is crowded, so standing out is crucial. Whether it’s thought leadership posts, industry insights, or even a witty comment on a trending topic, don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard!

Tip Four: Network Like a Pro

You’ve heard it before, and we’ll say it again—leverage your network! Join CMO groups on LinkedIn, attend industry events (like The Marketing Summit in Sydney or the Marketing Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne this October), and get out there. Share your story, exchange ideas, and most importantly, mingle! You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities might arise from a casual conversation over coffee.

Tip Five: Set Some Networking KPIs—Yes, Seriously

You’re a marketer—you live and breathe KPIs, so why not apply them to your job search? Set yourself some networking goals, like grabbing coffee with three recruiters, former leaders, or mentors each week. And don’t forget to keep expanding that LinkedIn network with five new connections every week. Treat your job search like a campaign, with measurable targets and a clear strategy.

Tip Six: Own Your Expertise

By now, you’ve probably worn every marketing hat there is. But it’s time to focus—what are your top three core pillars of expertise? Whether it’s digital strategy, brand management, or customer engagement, drill down into what makes you the expert in your field. Employers are looking for specialists, so make sure your expertise shines through in your CV and conversations.

Tip Seven: Track Your Job Hunt Like a Pro

Job hunting can quickly become a chaotic mess if you’re not organised. Thankfully, there are job tracker apps like LoopCV, Teal, Hutr, JobHero, and JobCull that can help keep your search in check. And if you’re more old school, never underestimate the power of a well-organised Excel spreadsheet. Keep track of your applications, follow-ups, and any responses—it’ll make the process feel a little less overwhelming.

Tip Eight: Get a Fresh Perspective on Your CV

We know, CV advice is like diet tips—everyone has an opinion, and they all seem to contradict each other. That’s why it’s worth getting a second opinion. Reach out to a recruiter who can offer some words of wisdom and help you polish that all-important document. After all, your CV is your first impression, so make sure it’s a good one!

Tip Nine: Don’t Forget to Breathe

Let’s face it, job hunting can be brutal. Some days, it might feel like you’re just spinning your wheels. That’s why it’s so important to take breaks, breathe, and recharge. Step away from the screen, take a walk, or indulge in your favorite hobby. The search can wait—your mental health can’t.

So there you have it—nine tips to help you navigate the job search maze. Remember, even if the journey feels long and winding, each step brings you closer to your next big opportunity. Keep your chin up, stay positive, and who knows? Your dream job might be just around the corner!

At New Chapter Talent , we get to connect with some of the most inspiring marketing leaders across Australia and New Zealand — and a common theme keeps emerging: the quiet power of the generalist marketer . It came up again at our recent New Chapter: CMO Collective Club lunch , where several CMOs shared their love for the book Range by David Epstein. In a world that often celebrates specialisation — the data gurus, the brand purists, the performance pros — these marketers reminded us why having range is something to be proud of. The power of the generalist marketer Generalist marketers are the ultimate connectors. They see the big picture — not just the campaign, but the entire ecosystem. They bridge brand and performance, data and creativity, strategy and execution. In today’s fast-paced marketing landscape, where roles and technologies evolve constantly, that adaptability is gold. The ability to zoom out and see how it all fits together is what makes generalists invaluable to teams and organisations alike. Here’s what makes generalist marketers truly shine: They see across the entire customer journey, from awareness to retention. They bring context, connecting insights from different disciplines. They lead cross-functional teams with empathy and perspective. They can pivot quickly when business priorities or market conditions change. Why generalists thrive in modern marketing In Range, David Epstein explores how generalists often outperform specialists in complex, unpredictable environments — precisely the kind of environment marketers operate in today. Epstein’s research spans fields from sport to science to business, showing that early specialisation isn’t always the key to success. Instead, those who explore widely, draw from diverse experiences, and learn to connect ideas across disciplines are often the ones who thrive when faced with change. It’s a book that challenges the “10,000-hour rule” popularised by Malcolm Gladwell , arguing instead that breadth of experience leads to better problem-solving and innovation. For marketers navigating evolving technologies, shifting customer behaviour, and constant transformation, that insight couldn’t be more relevant. The future belongs to the adaptable The future of marketing leadership isn’t just about expertise in one domain. It’s about connection, adaptability, and curiosity . It’s about understanding how everything from brand storytelling to customer data, AI, and CX fits together to drive growth. So here’s to the curious, the adaptable, the connector-marketers who zoom out and dive in — the ones shaping what modern marketing leadership really looks like. And if you haven’t read it yet, grab a copy of Range by David Epstein . It’s a brilliant reminder that being a generalist isn’t a weakness — it’s a superpower .
